Second Sunday of Advent December 10, 2017

Prepare the way of the Lord, make straight his paths.

— Mark 1:3

In a time of preparation, much of it having to do with material things, it is good to hear the words of Isaiah, “Comfort, give comfort to my people, / says your God” (Isaiah 40:1). In a time of such stress and rush, when our usual burdens are augmented by piles of Christmas preparations, we can choose to slow down, take some time to heal, and appreciate the enormous gift we are about to receive. Christ, the Son of God, has become one of us, and knows our human limitations.

Yet God, even now, is freeing us from the burdens that our inattentiveness to our God and to our deepest inner longings have heaped upon us. The Lord comes, not as a king with mighty armies, but as a shepherd leading the flocks with care and tenderness. Isaiah prophesies good news: our oppression is over, our sins forgiven. The savior we have awaited is coming, not the first time, but in the end times, as our salvation.

The posadas are a time-honored tradition of our Hispanic Catholic Faith. During this novena, we join Mary and Joseph on their journey to Bethlehem seeking shelter. We invite the entire parish community to join us each day as our ministries join together in hosting a posada. The Posadas take place after the evening Masses in the Family Life Center, during the week at 6 pm and weekend at 7:30 pm.

The Society of San Vicente de Paul has set up their annual Angel Tree. The angel ornaments placed on the tree will indicate the gender and age of a child, for whom you might wish to donate a Christmas gift. Please do not forget our older teens and children, some great gifts for them are movie gift cards. Sr. Rosemary is also taking donations of wrapping paper. We continue to thank you for your support and pray for your loving generosity. We would like to extend an extra thank you to the 2018 Pocahontas council for their donation of 120 gifts to the children in the colonias.

We invite all parishioners to join us on December 13th in CCD room St. Ann at 6 pm to pray the rosary in honor of the Most Precious Blood of Jesus.

“In him, we have redemption by his blood, the forgiveness of transgressions, in accord with the riches of his grace”—Ephesians 1:7

In preparation during this time of Advent, the church asks us to prepare our hearts for the coming of Jesus. To help make this possible Msgr. Alex has scheduled for some of his brother priests to come and assist in offering the Sacrament of Reconciliation. We will have several priests hearing confessions on Tuesday, December 19th at 6 pm in the main church. Come join us to cleanse your heart and offer it to the God who created it.
