Third Sunday of Advent

December 17, 2017

Rejoice always. Pray without ceasing.

— 1 Thessalonians 5:16-17

Isaiah proclaims truly good news to us! God’s coming brings not sadness, guilt, fear, wrath, or condemnation. No, God’s coming is a source of comfort and joy. Saying it once is not enough, for today’s readings are full of joy. Mary’s Magnificat substitutes for our psalm today, and our second reading encourages us to rejoice, to give thanks and praise. This is the root meaning of the Greek word for Eucharist. We are urged to rejoice and give thanks because the coming of the Lord brings joy, healing, liberty, release, vindication. It makes the very earth spring up with new life! Good tidings!

This year, December 24, 2017 (Christmas Eve), is on the 4th Sunday of Advent. This has given rise to some questions regarding the Masses for these consecutive celebrations. In order to celebrate appropriately, a person should participate in Masses for the 4th Sunday of Advent and again for Christmas Vigil/Day.

This means that at San Martin de Porres and individual must attend Mass on Saturday, December 23rd at 6:30 pm or  Sunday, December 24th at 8:30 am, 10:30 am, or 12:30 pm to fulfill their Sunday Obligation.

In addition, to fulfill one’s obligation for Christmas (which is a Holy Day of Obligation) an individual must attend Mass on Sunday, December 24th at 5:30 pm, 8 pm, or 11:30 pm or on Monday, December 25th at 12:30 pm. Please note if you had a Mass intention for "Midnight Mass” the Mass time will be moved to 11:30 pm. Please call the  Parish Office if you have any questions or need additional clarifications.

The posadas are a time-honored tradition of our Hispanic Catholic Faith. During this novena, we join Mary and Joseph on their journey to Bethlehem seeking shelter. We invite the entire parish community to join us each day as our ministries join together in hosting a posada. The Posadas take place after the evening Masses in the Family Life Center, during the week at 6 pm and weekend at 7:30 pm.

The Society of San Vicente de Paul has set up their annual Angel Tree. The angel ornaments placed on the tree will indicate the gender and age of a child, for whom you might wish to donate a Christmas gift. Please do not forget our older teens and children, some great gifts for them are movie gift cards. Sr. Rosemary is also taking donations of wrapping paper.  Deadline to turn in gifts is this Monday, December 18th to the parish office. We continue to thank you for your support and pray for your loving generosity.

In preparation during this time of Advent, the church asks us to prepare our hearts for the coming of Jesus. To help make this possible Msgr. Alex has scheduled for some of his brother priests to come and assist in offering the Sacrament of Reconciliation. We will have several priests hearing confessions on Tuesday, December 19th at 6 pm in the main church. Come join us to cleanse your heart and offer it to the God who created it.
